Welcome Message from the Station Commander

Clearly, schooling is always a major concern to personnel posted in to RAF Valley. You will be pleased to know that we have 2 excellent schools - Ysgol y Tywyn, on the Station itself, and Caergeiliog Grant Maintained School some 2 miles away - both offering primary education (4-11). Our links with these first-class schools are excellent, OC Admin Wg is a Governor of Ysgol y Tywyn and Sqn Ldr Ops is on the Board of Ysgol Caergeiliog.

Although there is the opportunity for children to be taught Welsh as a second language, lessons in other subjects are taught in English. Should you wish your children to be taught their secondary education in English, there are facilities available at the St Gerard's School and Hillgrove School in Bangor. For pre-school children we have a Crche facility and the Busy Bees Playgroup at the Station based in and around the Community Centre and Hive complex.

Day School Allowance (North Wales)

The Day School Allowance (North Wales) (DSA (NW)) is a unique opportunity for Service personnel to educate their children in North Wales.

DSA (NW) is available for the education of children of Service personnel based in North Wales who would otherwise be disadvantaged, academically and socially, by the bilingual teaching policy adopted within the Gwynedd and Isle of Anglesey Local Education Authorities. DSA (NW) is provided as an alternative to Boarding School Allowance (BSA) and assists towards the costs of the independent day schooling in the local area. In common with the principles adopted in other areas where English is not the teaching medium, no parental contribution is required towards the cost of school fees. Also travelling costs 'by the cheapest method appropriate' are also covered within this scheme.

Two independent day schools are available in Bangor, Hillgrove and St Gerard's and are both in use by Service families.

For further information please contact Personnel Services Flight (PSF) on (01407) 762241 extension 7515.

Primary Education
Ysgol y Tywyn (For children 3-11 years of age)

Ysgol y Tywyn

Ysgol y Tywyn is a small, friendly Local Authority school, which has served RAF Valley since 1971. On Anglesey this school is a unique educational establishment due to the very high proportion of RAF dependants who attend the school. The majority of pupils come from an RAF background, although a small number of local children also attend. The school has close links with the RAF and is delighted to be a part of this small community.

The school is based most conveniently on the Domestic Site at RAF Valley, near the Community Centre, the Crche, the Playgroup, the NAAFI and the Training & Welfare centre. The school's Nursery Unit is housed in a building directly opposite the school, which belongs to the Station. Most children are able to walk to school due to the close proximity of the houses. The Adams Close family quarters (Rhosneigr) are in the Ysgol y Tywyn catchment area and hence the LEA provides free transport for the children from this area who attend the school.

Language Policy

All children of personnel serving at RAF Valley, who attend this school, are exempt from following the Anglesey education Authority's bilingual policy, unless their parents wish them to do so. The children will be taught in English, and Welsh will be taught as a second language according to the requirements of the National Curriculum.

High educational achievements, as reflected in the annual SATs results, are one of the school's trademarks.

Key Stage 1 SAT Results:

100% achieved Level 2 or above in English and Mathematics.

Key Stage 2 SAT Results:

100% achieved Level 4 or above in English.
100% achieved Level 4 or above in Science.
75% achieved Level 4 or above in Mathematics.

All results are well above the national average.

The school believes that this is a direct result of the friendly, caring environment, which is fostered here and also small class sizes. All of the teachers at eh school are highly experienced, friendly and approachable and quite used to dealing with the problems which children sometimes experience when moving to a new school. Strong links exist between parents and the school. Parents help out in a variety ways such as in the classroom environment and in helping to raise money for school funds.
